Charles M Rose consists of Sylvie Mermoud and Pierre Bonard, two artists creating a single work… To tell the truth, drawing ‘with four hands’ is, after all, still drawing with two hands, even if – as one might imagine – it involves two fully-fledged individuals. With Charles M Rose, it is the alternation that prevails. And even if one or the other finds themselves working alone at any given moment, it is important to note the great consideration within this drawing duo: each preparing the ground for the other. It is thus in the development of the composition that the truly collaborative nature of the work comes to the fore. And in this interplay of give and take, one is truly reminded of a dance… It is not exactly a ballroom dance that these drawings bring to mind. The world in which Charles M Rose operates – from the mineral to the vegetal, from the menacing to the soothing, from fluid to rough, from supple to rigid, from dark to luminous, from the burlesque to the tragic – from the death drive to the life drive, as the Freudians would say – all of this makes our gaze waltz. Here we are in the midst of a dance that is both macabre and joyful. I call it ‘a tango on the edge of the precipice’. Christian Pellet

Arno Louis is a multidisciplinary artist based in Biel. His practice revolves around painting, dance and interdisciplinary performance. Through his artistic universe, he explores the tensions between our humanity and the natural world in which we live.

My painting project “Recherche d’harmonie” explores the complex relationship between human beings and nature. The bird becomes a figure of freedom and resistance in the face of the transformations imposed on the living world. Through reclaimed supports, colours and forms inspired by its habitat, the works question our place within the living world and our ability to rediscover an ecological, emotional and collective harmony. During the closing event, Arno Louis extends this research through the interdisciplinary performance “Frôler le ciel”. Through silhouettes and rear projections, the project explores our quest for freedom in a world where constraints shape and limit us, but never manage to extinguish the desire to take flight and emancipate ourselves.

Philemon Lechot, born in 1999, grew up in Moutier, studied architecture and also works as a self-taught artist in a studio in Biel. His figurative drawings offer a sensitive perspective on everyday life, closeness, matter and intimate situations.

In the E19 group exhibition, Philemon Lechot presents a drawing-based approach that draws on everyday life, observation, intimacy and figurative condensation.

Kaspar Flueck, born in Solothurn in 1989, lives and works as an artist in Basel and Zurich. Following a foundation course and a specialism in graphic design at the School of Design in Bern and Biel, he developed a painterly practice that oscillates within multi-layered pictorial spaces between abstraction, surrealism, chiaroscuro, cosmic networks and emotional inner spaces.

In the E19 group exhibition, Kaspar Flueck represents a painterly approach in which dark and light spaces, inner landscapes and cosmic structures merge.
